Ford GT40: A Legend That Defeated Ferrari in Endurance Racing. The Ford GT40 is considered one of the greatest Fords ever built. It was developed with a goal to defeat Ferrari in endurance racing. The GT40 project was born out of the failed negotiations between Ford and Ferrari for the acquisition of the Italian sports car manufacturer. After Enzo Ferrari backed out of the deal, Henry Ford II was determined to build a car that would “kick Ferrari’s ass”.

The GT40 was the result of a massive investment of over £55 million (1.1 Billion in today’s money), with a total of 105 race and road-going examples built between 1964 and 1969. Its achievements in endurance racing are unparalleled, with the GT40 scoring a 1-2-3 finish at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1966 and continuing to dominate the race for four consecutive years until 1969. Ferrari, who previously dominated Le Mans from 1960 to 1965, never won the race again after the arrival of the GT40.

Today, original GT40s are valued between £3 million and £10 million, but for those who desire the GT40 experience without breaking the bank, there are continuation models available for a lower price than a Lamborghini Huracán. Take a virtual tour of the Ford GT40, supplied by Total Headturners, and immerse yourself in the rich history of this legendary car.
