Toyota prices 2009 Corolla and Matrix

DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. today announced pricing for its 2009 Corolla and Matrix small cars and a special-edition 2008 FJ Cruiser SUV.

The new Corolla and Matrix begin arriving at dealers next month, the automaker said.

The 2009 Corolla comes in Standard, LE, XLE, S and XRS trim packages. Base prices range from $15,910 for the standard Corolla to $20,610 for the base Corolla XRS, including shipping.

Standard, LE and XLE and S model Corollas are powered by a new 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing 132 hp and 128 pounds-feet of torque. The powerplant is combined with a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic.

The Corolla XRS is powered by a new 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine making 158 hp and 162 pounds-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the XRS, and a five-speed automatic is available.

All 2009 Corollas come equipped with antilock brakes. Vehicle stability control and traction control with cutoff switch are available as options

The standard Matrix is powered by the 1.8-liter Corolla powerplant, while the S and the XRS models come equipped with the more powerful 2.4-liter. Horsepower and torque levels for both engine displacements are the same in the Corolla and Matrix. All-wheel drive is optional on the Matrix S.

All Matrix models are equipped with a standard five-speed manual transmission. The standard and S Matrix models have an optional four-speed automatic, and the XRS has an optional five-speed automatic.

Toyota's FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Special Edition SUV will be launched late this month and continue into early February -- Toyota expects to make 3,200 units. The Trail Teams edition offers off-road features including Bilstein shocks, 16-inch alloy wheels with rugged tires and a rear differential lock.

The optional package is $4,755 more than the $24,410 base price of the 4.0-liter V-6 FJ Cruiser with six-speed manual transmission. It is $5,110 more than the $24,820 base of the FJ Cruiser with a six-speed automatic transmission combined with the 4.0-liter V-6.
